On your first microdermabrasion treatment, what should you expect ?
So you have some skin ailment that you’re considering getting your first microdermabrasion treatment for. Whether that be for acne, strech marks, signs of aging, etc… The point is you’ve chosen to give this procedure a try, and are not sure what to expect.
First of all, realize two things, first Microdermabrasion is not a major surgery — and on the same token it is also not simply a facial. Your outer layer of skin will be blasted by high speed minerals to remove the outer layer of skin, without damaging the skin.
For me it was for acne. I scheduled a time to talk with the doctor, and ultimately booked an appointment for the next week. Before going in, I had no idea what to expect… would it be painful? would it actually work? how many treatments would it take? etc…
So I arrived on the day, a very friendly nurse ask me to lay down and explained what would happen. It started almost immediately, you’ll be asked to respond with your comfort level as the microdermabrasion machines have variable setting of strength. The whole thing only took about 40 minutes, and afterwards my skin felt all tingly. The next day, my face went red. I was worried about this at first because I didn’t want people to know that I’d got it done. Luckily the only people that said anything, just made passing comments about how I was lucky to have gotten a chance to get a tan the previous day (it only looks like a slight sun burn). This went completely away by the third day, and left my skin feeling very smooth.
Surprisingly the next couple day I did indeed see a lessening of the effects of acne, it could just be a coincidence that it worked so fast (it’s supposed to take a couple treatments). However, I couldn’t complain. I went in for the next 5 treatments, and the results overall were very positive, and I now continue to recommend microdermabrasion treatments for all those who have not tried them.

The difference is actually huge, one really has nothing to do with the other.
There are two types of microdermabrasion facials, the first is a some sort of cream treatment, and the second is an actual microdermabrasion procedure done in a dermatologist’s office.
After microdermabrasion procedures rightfully gained popularity, beauty companies started offering products with the name microdermabrasion in them. Beware though, the two couldn’t be more apart. Most of the products that claim to be microdermabrasion treatments are actually simply creams, gels, or masks that contain some abrasive minerals to help exfoliate and strip skin away. The real treatment using a specialized machine with minerals and fine diamonds to blast the skin at high velocities, leaving the skin sore and red for a few days, and then the skin remains fresh and new afterwards.
There are no true microdermabrasion machines that you can purchase for under around $200. If you’re really curious about microdermabrasion treatments, I’d recommend give a real one at your doctor’s office first. From there, you’ll see and learn the difference, and know what to look for in the future.

The Neutrogena Microdermabrasion system is an entry level product that can be found in many local stores, as well as on Amazon. It is aimed towards those who perhaps cannot afford a normal microdermabrasion system, but want something a bit more comprehensive than a normal cream. It only costs around $20, so you cannot expect it to perform as well as the real microdermaabrasion systems.
The system comes with an applicator (which they call a microdermabrasion applicator, but really isn’t), and a one month supply of rejuvenating puffs (twelve of them), along with batteries.
Microdermabrasion relies upon tiny microcrystals which are gently blasted onto the top layer of skin to remove any imperfections, and erase any damage done. This system does not do that at all, so you technically cannot call it a microdermabrasion system (it’s more of a marketing term in this case), however it does do a decent job when compared to creams at a similar price range.
Next up, is the Kendal Professional Microdermabrasion System. If you’ve had a professional microdermabrasion treatment, and want to find the same thing for your home, without spending an arm and a leg, then this is your best bet. The Kendal machine, unlike the cheaper Neutrogena models, is a true microdermabrasion system. It will flow micro crystals on to the top layer of your skin to remove imperfections.
While it will not be quite the same quality as the one your dermatologist uses, for in home use, and for the bang for your buck, this is a great system. Surprisingly it only costs around $200 at Amazon too. This machine is best used for personal use, and not if you plan to offer microdermabrasions in a spa or salon. That brings us to the next system…
The Diamond machine is a real gem. This is a professional grade system that can be used for both personal use (if you must have a top of the line system), or for use in a salon. Since it is a professional grade machine, it comes with a lot more features than less expensive machines. It allows you to treat the skin with both a hot and cold function, has an ultra sonic function to really get into the skin, and comes with absolutely everything you need to get started (multiple diamond tips and all).
Even though this machine is indeed powerful, and comes with a host of functions, it’s important to remember that it is still no replacement for your dermatologist. The price on this system is $469.95 at Amazon.
]]>Microdermabrasion is the kind of treatment that usually requires multiple treatments. Getting just one treatment is usually not a good idea, you should really schedule multiple session to truly get the best before and after effects.
You can schedule a single appointment to get an idea of how it works, how microdermabrasion feels and then when you get used to it, schedule more. You shouldn’t expect to see great results after the first appointment, but it isn’t uncommon to see solid results after just one (it’s just better to go for more). Microdermabrasion feels like little tiny particles hitting your skin at a high speed. I know that sounds a bit disconcerting, but it isn’t like they are sand particles they are very very fine particles that gently strip away the top layer of skin. For me, this helped me get rid of my acne as a teenager, and would highly recommend trying it.

Teen acne can be a real pain, but you really don’t have to live with it. I had acne as a teen, and thought it was hopeless. Luckily I stumbled across Microdermabrasion therapy, and after a few weeks of treatment my acne was nearly all gone. It was actually amazing to see the before and after.

As with most things in dealing with your health, you’re better off going to visit a doctor that specializes in this sort of thing for advice. Not everyone is the same, so try to avoid all those things you see on TV every night.
